The New 37th District Boundaries
The 37th District is in Southeast Seattle and Renton, with a single precinct in
Tukwila. After last year's re-districting, its northern boundary is roughly Roy
St., from Lake Washington west to 16th Avenue. It skirts the area of Capital
Hill around Group Health, but then travels down 16th Avenue from Roy to Columbia
St., then west on James St. to Elliott Bay. We now have the International
District and Pioneer Square, along with the tip of Beacon Hill north of Holgate
St. The new line goes up the Holgate overpass to 13th Avenue, including the
business district of north Beacon Hill, and then comes south along Beacon Avenue
all the way to Edmunds St. before it zigs and zags its way to I-5. Where Martin
Luther King Way meets I-5, the line follows Martin Luther King as it curves into
Renton, where it becomes Sunset, and continues to follow Sunset until it meets
I-405. Finally, it splits off from I-405 and hits Lake Washington at the very
north edge of Gene Coulon Park. It goes up the lakefront from there north to
McGilvra St., and then west again to Roy St. to complete the loop.
Included in the new 37th District are the neighborhoods of Brighton, part of the
Central Area, Center Park, Columbia City, Courtland, Dunlap, Garfield, Genesee,
Jackson Place, Judkins Park, Lakewood, Leschi, part of Madison Valley, Madrona,
Mt. Baker, Pritchard Beach, Rainier Beach, all of the Rainier Valley, RainKing,
Skyway, part of South Hill, South Ryan Way Hill, Squire Park, and no doubt a few
places I've missed. Each of these neighborhoods has a community organization
that meets monthly or quarterly, and in the "old" 37th I've met with each of
them regularly over the last six years. In the new neighborhoods, I'll be there
soon. (If you'd like me to come speak with your neighborhood council, hit

Welcome!
If you're in the International District, Pioneer Square, north Beacon Hill, or
Renton, you may be new to the District. WELCOME! We're a very diverse part of
town, ethnically and culturally, and that I believe is what gives us our
characteristic tolerance, friendliness, and ecumenical atmosphere. In Columbia
City and throughout the Rainier Valley, you'll hear Amharic spoken; in Seward
Park the kids come back from school practicing their Hebrew, and their elders
often speak Yiddish; and throughout the District you'll hear Spanish, Japanese,
Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Russian, and a wide variety of
other languages. This part of Seattle and Renton truly represents the new
America of the 21st Century, and we think that's just dandy.
